Today is Melissa's final day of teaching (at least for a while). Three years teaching second grade in Memphis, TN, and four years teaching third grade in Ankeny. She's done an incredible job, dealt with her share of frustrations, persevered through many challenges, and has helped hundreds of children gain knowledge and skills that will be with them forever.
This morning, I asked her this question:
1. Teaching in Memphis taught me a lot about myself. I learned patience, endurance, and how to be firm, fair, and consistent.
2. I had to lean on Todd often during our Memphis years. He helped me get through the tough times and helped me enjoy the good times.
3. I think that my teaching experience will help me be a better mother to my kids. I have a pretty good grasp on discipline, developmental assessment, organization, and teaching skills because of my experience.
4. I have really enjoyed helping kids learn. I receive lots of satisfaction in seeing a child's mind develop and grow.
5. I will always think of my colleagues. Some of my closest friendships have been developed during my teaching years.
This morning, I asked her this question:
"When you're old and gray, and you think back on your first 7 years of teaching elementary school, what are 5 things that will come to your mind?"Here are her responses:
