Mattern Halloween Dinner

We enjoyed our weekly dinner at the Mattern house last night. The kids (and Sheryl) all dressed up in their halloween outfits. It is the only night of the year that my mother-in-law is a witch. Even when she's a witch, though, she's incredibly sweet.

The Grocery Getter

Another Excellent Study Bible

Two weeks ago I wrote several posts on the recently released ESV Study Bible. I received mine a week ago and have, thus far, found it to be very helpful. I learned today of an offer on another study bible that I had been interested in two years ago.

Ligonier Ministries is celebrating Reformation Week by offering a copy of the Reformation Study Bible (ESV) for a donation of any amount. This genuine leather bible retails for $69.99. You can learn more about this translation here. Act quickly, though, as I don't expect this offer to last very much longer.

It Happened!

$1.99 for super unleaded gas. I recently told a friend that if gas drops to $1.99, I'd pull the hose out after filling up and proceed to wash my Buick in 89 octane. Recent check on gasbuddy.com shows some stations in Des Moines at $1.96.

Bar Stool Economics

This short lesson in bar stool economics is making the rounds on the web. Click here to learn why the "take more from the rich" strategy hurts everyone.

Churchill on Taxes

"To think you can make a man richer by putting on a tax is like a man thinking that he can stand in a bucket and lift himself up by the handle."

On to Templeton

On Sunday we drove to Templeton to check out a van I found on CraigsList. Templeton is a town of roughly 300 people in the rolling hills of west-central Iowa. I chuckled at the owner's instructions on how to get to his house:
There's only one way into town ... when you get to the stop sign - there's only one stop sign in town - go straight. When you come to the the church - there's only one church, take a left. We're the third house on the left.
Anyway, we now have a van ... more photos to come later.

To the Sheriffs

Following the rally in downtown Des Moines, we headed to the Sheriff's to pick up our pudgy daughter. The kids had fun frolicking in the leaves under their beautiful sugar maple.

Oh, and Melissa got pooped on.

More on Aaron Tippin

I recently posted about meeting Aaron Tippin. Here are some more observations about this spectacular man:

When you are Aaron Tippin, you can wear as many bracelets as you want and not feel like a woman.

When you are Aaron Tippin, you wear under armour ... as tight as possible.

When you are Aaron Tippin, you don't need a belt to hold your Wranglers up...

... that's what your wife is for (at least I think that was his wife).

Sarah Palin Rally

On Saturday we attended the Sarah Palin rally at Hy-Vee Hall. While we didn't get to meet her, I was thrilled to meet this guy:
This is Aaron Dupree Tippin, world-famous country music star and mustachioed, muscle-bound song machine. His hits include songs like "There Ain't Nithin Wrong With The Radio," "You've Got to Stand for Something," and "Honky Tonk Superman." If you haven't heard his music, you should. And if you have, then you know. This one will get framed.

Abby and Maddox

A very busy weekend ... lots to blog ... here we go ...

Abby Taylor and Maddox traveled back to the Heartland for the weekend. Melissa and Ella enjoyed seeing the Taylors and some other friends.

What Buffet is Doing Now

A few days ago, Warren Buffet wrote a short op-ed piece for the NY Times, in which I think he made some very cogent points. My favorite line was this,
"A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful."
Read the whole thing.

Blog 101: Tipping the Hat

When you learn of something interesting from someone else's blog, it is customary to give a "hat tip" at the end of your post. A hat tip is is an acknowledgment to someone (or a website) for bringing something to the blogger’s attention. Hat tips are usually abbreviated h/t or HT. Here's an example:

Last night I learned about a murder committed in Iowa following a rowdy chess match. The author of the post seemed to imply that this type of thing happens often in my state. The author was from Memphis. Enough said.

Joe the Plumber

The star of last night's debate was not McCain or Obama, or even Joe Six-pack. Last night, the fame belonged to "Joe the Plumber." In case you aren't familiar with this story, you can read about it here. You can also check out this internet interview where Joe (the Plumber) expounds on his concerns.

Little People in a Big World

From Uncrate,
"Living in a large city can be overwhelming — people can often feel lost amongst so many, and this feeling is perfectly conveyed in the brilliant photography of Little People in the City ($18). This hardcover tome represents a collection of photographs from street artist Slinkachu, who for the last several years has photographed and then left tiny hand-painted figurines all around London — and has chronicled his work in a terrific blog. A perfect book for your coffee table."
What an interesting idea! Small things shot in macro. Someday I'll come up with such an original concept. This photo is close, but not nearly as interesting.

The ESV Study Bible: Mark Driscoll

Melissa and I have enjoyed Driscoll's passion for the gospel over the last few years. He models repentance, conviction, and authenticity in his ministry. He blogs effectively. He loves Packer and Piper (even bought the latter a new jacket). Driscoll tackles difficult topics, providing answers that are rooted in the timeless truths of God's word. If I were to choose only one person to teach me how to snowboard, it would be Driscoll. Here's what he has to say about the ESV Study Bible:

Makenna Faith Willis

The ESV Study Bible Online Edition

LBJ Has Arrived

In addition to the ESV Study Bible arriving this week, LBJ (Little Baby Jared) has made it's official entrance into the world. Her name is Makenna Faith Willis and she's very cute. Check out the Willis blog for updates.

The ESV Study Bible: J.I. Packer

I have great respect for this man. J.I. Packer's books, most notably Knowing God and Quest for Godliness: A Puritan Vision of the Christian Life, have influenced me greatly over the years. Packer's life story and body of work are impressive, and his humility and grace are uncommon. If I could sit down for tea with only one living person, that person would be James Innell Packer. Here's what he has to say about the ESV Study Bible:
